2007 review

I haven't gotten much done today, this cold is kicking my butt. I spent most of the day sleeping or blowing my nose. Tomorrow will be better! I have the day off with the kids. I refuse to be sick on my day off!!!

I hope you all have a safe New Year's Eve. We will be traveling a whole block and a half (we'll walk so we don't have to drive home drunk, LOL!!!!!) to my folks for good food and merriment. The kids are convinced that they are going to watch the ball drop, I'm not convinced that I will see it though. I've very much looking forward to 2008. My calendar is filling up already and you all know how I love to stay busy!!
Here's to the new year!

Christmas Morning!

We've had a lovely Christmas. Nice to have four days off (with the weekend). Here are some pictures of the kids from this morning. They were in rare form, all decked out in their new pj's.

Wav got 3 new sets of furniture for her beloved doll houses. Thank you Grandpa Dale.

Dan in his new Manning jersey (do you know how hard these are to find?) and Colts hat. Thank you Grandpa Dale.

Wav opening her new comforter, that she's been begging me for, for months now. Thank you Aunt Lauria & Uncle Danny.

Dan opening his electric blanket, thank you Aunt Lauria & Uncle Danny.

Grandpa Kevin & Grandma Sandy bought Waverly a guitar, thank you!! It was just what she wanted. (Do you have any idea how much this is going to cost me?) I spent a good part of the morning trying to tune the stupid thing. I'm a pianist not a guitar player. Well at least this morning I wasn't a guitar player but we'll get to that later.

The many faces of Dan.

As always, we had spent part of the weekend looking for Waverly's missing glasses. Much to my surprise she found them in the bottom of her Christmas stocking. Go figure.

Stella had to be right in the mix of things, of course.

We got the kids Guitar Hero II. At this point in the morning I did not realize that they were actually opening my gift. I'm not much of a gamer. I've tried to play xbox 360 with the boys. I end up getting shot or run over in the first 15 seconds. So after un-packaging all the doll house furniture. And putting batteries in the Crayola thing-ies and in the interactive doll (that cried and belched for the first 30 minutes) I thought I'd take a break and see what this guitar hero was all about. Three hours later i emerge from the darkness of our tv room. My left hand was cramped and callouses were starting to form on my first three fingers. My legs ached from the rock star stance you have to take in order to properly play this game. I'm in love. I'm a GUITAR HERO!!! Oh I'm hooked like a little boy. It was all I could do to pull myself away for Christmas dinner (which took place at Arby's, out at the Mill, because that was the only thing open and we had nothing good to eat!).

Needless to say we've had a wonderful Christmas. Dan, my new roadie, loves to watch me play GH II. I really couldn't tell you what the rest of my family did today, but I'm certain they had a lovely day as well.
I'm glad the holiday's are over, too much stress for me. My tree was down and packed away by 10:24am. I'm ready to get on with 2008!!

grey

i did a little digital scrapbooking today.... 2008 is going to be about one page, 8.5x11 layouts... i've got book upon book of 12x12 stuff, i'm going for something different this year. and maybe a little more digital.. this one was fun.

sledding!!!

It was cold. I was not prepared for how cold it was out on that little hill. We pulled up and all I could hear were little boys yelling "hey Waverly!!!".

if you click on this picture you can see it a little bigger, Dan called this a "hip sparker".

Reinbeck Elementary

Third time's a charm! We were finally able to have the elementary Christmas program (after having to be canceled twice due to weather). It was lovely. The kids all looked great and sang their little hearts out! Dan's class also played their recorders. It was adorable.

Obama in 08

We started our morning with program practice at church. The kids all look so cute!! I can't wait for tomorrow night. Then Dan & I headed to Waterloo to go to the Town meeting with Barack Obama. We were 2nd row again, it was very motivational. Dan was pumped because he was able to get a hat!
We were waiting at the end to shake hands with him and a very kind lady that was in front of us took Dan by the shoulders and moved him in front of her so that he didn't miss out on a chance to shake the senator hand. He thought that was pretty cool!

These events always give me equipment envy, Dan's always nudging me to look at a particular camera or lens, lol.

The love of family around the holidays

I received this from my father:
Sent: Friday, December 14, 2007 4:51 PM
Subject: MERRY CHRISTMAS

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas from Edna and I in Apache Junction
Arizona.
We also wish for peace and brotherhood for all in 2008.

With that in mind, if you are wondering why you did not receive a gift
from us this year, I decided to make a donation in your names to the RNC
(Republican National Committee).
2008 Is going to be an important year for the Republican Party in their
quest to retain the White House and hopefully regain a majority in the
Congress. I wasn't sure I could count on every one's support
individually, so I decided to fore go my usual generous Christmas gifts
and spend my money where it is needed, to defeat Hillary or whichever
bleeding heart liberal they decide to nominate.
GW and the gang at the RNC thank you and wish you all a Happy New Year.
;)

Little Dan & I responded:

Thanks for the heads up, I'll be sure to let little Dan know, just as soon as he is finished gearing up for our big day!!!

right now he's putting the finishing touches on our lighted 10 foot by 5 foot banner that says OBAMA in 08 that we are taking to the rally today. Then he has to put his Obama Hope t-shirt on over his coat as it's going to be a cold one today waiting to get in to the rally... but once he's done with that I'll let him know about your generous contribution, I'm sure he'll be thrilled... oh wait here he comes....

his response to your gift: and i quote (he is standing here shaking his head in disappointment) "don't do me any favors mister" ...out he goes to put up the last of the 7 Obama yard signs that we didn't get in before the snow.

thanks again and have a merry liberal Christmas.

Hodgepodge Tuesday

We are enjoying a snow day today and after ordering holiday cards for Jodi this morning I decided I had to get a shot of my kids. So I made them get out of bed, get dressed and stand on the front steps for a few pictures. They were good sports about it!

Isn't she about the coolest thing ever!! Thanks to my good friend Nanci in PA. This is probably the most fun inter office mail package I've ever gotten! Hopefully in a few months we'll get to enjoy some margaritas together!

Caught some cute shots of Claire on Saturday before we headed out to Marshalltown.

The Bratt Patrol by Jennifer Hall
Dan was excited to go to the book signing Saturday and to meet Jennifer (Jennifer is an alumni of GR). We also picked up a copy to give to the library at school. He is anxiously awaiting the next book in the series which will be out in March. You can find out more about the book at www.authorjenniferhall.com

2008

This is why laundry doesn't get done. Why my bathroom isn't as clean as it could be. Why i don't cook a meal every night (although i did cook tonight, thank you Tami for the fabulous "recipe")

delightfully tacky!

I just dreaded putting up our tree this year. There are eighty hundred pieces to it. It takes forever to get the branches all sorted and figure out, again which color goes on first. I always lose my tempter mid way through and swear I'm never putting it up again... I had actually resolved not to put up a tree this year... then I came across this adorable little white tree on Jordan Krogman's blog. And I thought, I could do that! I would have said I'm not a "white" tree person, but for some reason it just looked right, except that I wanted colored lights. Then this morning Tami emails me pictures of her new tree and it's exactly what I want, colored lights and everything!!! I couldn't wait to leave at lunch and go get my perfect tree!!!! It went up so quickly and easily, i love it!! The kids and I sorted through all of our ornaments and hung up what seemed appropriate. I still think it's slightly tacky but i love it.

In addition to my Christmas decorating stress, I've been feeling Holiday Card stress as well. Here are a few of the cards I've made in the past few weeks. None of which I'm thrilled with, or want to make a lot of.. So I'm still working on that little project. Oh and I don't have a picture of the kids yet either.. maybe I should do Valentines cards instead of Christmas cards (worked for Heidi one year!!)

Ellis Island

I had so much fun helping Dan with his Ellis Island project. Originally he wanted to build the statue of liberty out of legos, but he was certain he didn't have enough green ones and he didn't want lady liberty to be multi colored. We gathered information and pictures off the internet. I was so please that we were able to get a copy of the actual ship manifest that listed Paul Kopplin along with his parents and his brother and sister. So we are done a whole 5 days ahead of schedule and he is ready to give his presentation on his Great Great Grandpa Paul Kopplin's journey to America.

Ghost of Christmas Past

I was really looking forward to my do-nothing weekend at home. The past few weekends have been so busy and the next few promise to keep me hopping so I thought how great that I have this weekend to stay in and relax! By 9pm last night I was bored, lol! I did a little cleaning Saturday morning (very little), made some hot spinach dip and then sat down to watch a couple movies with the kids... There were so many things I wanted to do, like scrapbook, or take our Christmas picture. I thought about doing all of those but didn't actually do any of them... so today is my keep busy day. I'm going to finish some things I've been working on. I'm going to be productive and get something accomplished!!! While I was thinking about scrapbooking Friday night I came across these pictures... It's fun to see how they have grown. This first one is Christmas 2002, Waverly is still shorter than Dan here.

Christmas 2003: Wav was still at Happytime and Dan was in Kindergarten at Immanuel.

Christmas 2004: This picture was taken after our 10 hour car ride to Ohio!

Christmas 2005: I went to sitting down pictures so as not to accentuate the fact that Waverly had become taller than Dan.

Christmas 2006: Truth be told this is late Jan 07. Last Christmas I had this crazy idea that I was not going to be stuck behind my camera all Christmas. Whose dumb idea was that? Consequently I had no pictures of my kids together at Christmas. I promise that will not happen again, lol!
